gebruikt. Daardoor laaide de strijd om de kaart
weer op! Ogenschijnlijk lijkt de hierbij afge
drukte kaart niet bijster origineel. Immers, de
betrouwbaarheid van de bepaling van de geo
grafische lengte, de betrouwbaarheid van de
breedtebepaling daargelaten,, was tot aan de
uitvinding in 1759 van het precisiehorloge van
John Harrison niet mogelijk.5 De kusten van
Cornwall, Bretagne, Spanje en Marokko lijken
op de kaart wat de geografische lengte betreft
ten opzichte van elkaar echter redelijk be
trouwbaar te zijn ingetekend. Dit met de vraag
of dat in 1434 al mogelijk was, zodat wellicht
met recht en reden getwijfeld kan worden aan
de echtheid van de zogeheten kaart van 1434.
Landmeters hebben aan het vervaardigen van
genoemde kaart zeker geen deel gehad!
In de USA prijken zelfs veel letterlijke land-
metersbeelden. De stad Frisco in Texas is er
zelfs zo trots op dat ze de landmeter frontaal
op haar eigen site afbeeldt. Voor meer infor
matie lijkt een betere site die van de Texas So
ciety of Professional Surveyors (TSPS). Het
beeld staat langs de State Highway (SH) 289
oftewel Preston Road. De tekst: 'Military Sur
vey of Preston Road - Bv 1835, the under-fun
ded provisional government of Texas offered
to pay its soldiers with land. Surveying parties
flooded the frontier, ingressing Native hunting
grounds. Hard-fought battles and skirmishes
brought no lasting victories to the Natives as
roads, settlements and farms sprang up when
the new Republic formed in 1836. In 1840,
Colonel William G. Cooke, in the first regi
ment of infantry of the Texas Army, was aut
horized to lay out a military road from Austin
tot he Red River along the old trail known by
many names: the Shawnee Trail, Preston trail,
Preston Road, Military Road and the Texas
Road. The building of Preston Road was the
important beginning to safe and secure com
merce. trade and settlement in the area. Mili
tary surveyors used transists and a linked
'Guntcr Chain that bore 66 links to a chain,
66 feet long to lay out their roads, often along
old buffalo or cattle trails. The unit of measure
for all Texas roads surveyed in this era was the
Bara. 1 Bara - 2.779 feet (the Spanish equiva
lent of a yard).'
