Description: A large, wooden box with iron
handles (a bit rusted) that closes with two
iron hooks (rusted). It is subdivided inside
by many wooden blocks padded with green
felt on top. The box is almost empty, except
for one component of the instrument that it
used to contain, plus a metal pin and what is
likely a levelling screw.
The part that remains is a long cylindrical
tube made of opaque glass, which is marked
with a scale from 75 to 0 (left to right). This
opaque tube attaches at both ends to brass
caps that have rectangular extensions. The
opaque inner tube is encased in an outer
transparent tube.
The part where the brass cap meets the outer
tube is sealed with a dark material (dark
wood? ebonite).
The rectangular extension of one of the
brass caps has a perforation for a screw.
- Function: The box was likely for a survey
ing instrument. The purpose of the last re
maining piece is unknown.

surveying and geodetic instruments in the
National Museum of American History
reflect the importance of these activities in
America since the first European colonists
settled here some 400 years ago and turned
the American landscape into property. With
these instruments, and others of their ilk,
Americans determined the limits of private

the boundaries of colonies, states, and

Men bezit twee Holland Circles. Een met
"JACOB SECOES" and "ANNO 1622" en
een latere mét kijker van "Jacobus de Steur
Fecit Leyde". 'The name Holland Circle was
coined in the 19th century. The Holland
Circle is similar to but easily distinguishable
from the common theodolite.' Zo besluit dit
National Museum of American History in
Washington DC de beschrijving van de
Hollandse cirkel op haar website.
