Varia: sextant in de kunst
In het Brooklyn Museum bevindt zich van de
beroemde Winslow Homer (1836-1910) een
instrumentenrijke ets van rond 1887, getiteld
'Eight Bells' (www.en.wikipedia.org). De tijd
werd vroeger gemeten met zandlopers, die er
een half uur over deden het onderste glas te
vullen. Eenmaal gevuld noemde men dat 'één
glas', en de zandloper moest vervolgens wor
den omgedraaid. Een wacht van vier uur be
stond zo uit acht glazen. Elk glas werd kenbaar
gemaakt door slagen met de scheepsbel. Een
wacht die om 12.00 uur begon had zijn eerste
glas om 12.30
uur en werd
aangekondigd
met één enkele
slag met de
scheepsbel. De
wisseling van
de wacht vond
dan plaats bij
vier dubbele slagen, waarna de cyclus werd
herhaald. Of bij de hondenwacht van 0.00-4.00
uur ook altijd zo'n herrie werd gemaakt is een
vraag.Door de dienstdoende wacht werden
de zandlopers weleens te vroeg omgekeerd, om
zo hun aflossing te vervroegen. Dit heette
'zandeten', zo weet nu zelfs wikipedia.
Recenter is een andere artistieke afbeelding
van een sextant. Het lijkt toevallig: "A pirate
