'Located on Pittsburgh's North Shore, across
from PNC Park and at the end of the Roberto
Clemente Bridge stands two bronze figures of
construction workers. The 5-foot, 8-inch tall
sculpture was designed by artist George
Danhires. It was dedicated on June 12, 1984
and was created as a tribute to the builders
who made Pittsburgh's two construction pro
jects called "renaissance" a success. The male
figures depicted in the sculpture are based on
photographs of two actual employees who
worked for the Mellon-Stuart construction
company. The Mellon-Stuart construction
company commissioned the work. The bronze
figures are wearing construction worker signa
ture clothes and hard hats. At their feet is a
large tool box and between them is a sur
veyor's tripod.

'The history of Pennsylvania land surveying
goes all the way back to the 1700s and to a pair
of famous land surveyors named Charles
Mason and Jeremiah Dixon. Though many
may not recognize the names, most will recog
nize the combined last names that title the line
they surveyed that became a hot issue for next
100 years or more, the Mason-Dixon Line.
This line established the border between
Pennsylvania and Maryland, and became a
heated American topic when it started being
considered the line between the "free" states
and the "slave" states. Though this is one of
the earliest surveying issues in the state's
history, the drama surrounding it began even
before this, as the line was a direct result of a
land ownership conflict between the state's
founding family, the Penns, and the Calverts of
Maryland.'
