Werden de afstanden te groot, dan werd dit te
"...laborouse, and not spedefull..." (bewerkelijk
en niet snel genoeg) en dus "...sum men do use
(and beste) for y more expedicion and spede to
mete wyth a corde, or a lyne conteynynge in it
fyve perches in lengthe..." .sommige man
nen gebruiken [en ten goede] omdat het vlug
ger en sneller gaat, te meten met een koord, of
een lijn bevattende vijf perches in lengte).12 In
1556 schreef Leonard Digges dat deze lijn
knotted or marked [was] at the ende of every
pearche(geknoopt of gemarkeerd waren aan
het einde van elke perch.13 In zijn nieuwe werk
A geometrical practise, named Pantometria
uit 1571, gaat Digges er nog steeds van uit dat
er met stokken en touwen gemeten wordt.14
De eerste vermelding van het gebruik van de
meetketting in Engeland volgt elf jaar later in
1582 (zie tabel 1). In dat jaar publiceert Ed
ward Worsop zijn A discouerie of sundrie er-
rours and faults daily committed by Lande-
meaters.15 Over de instrumenten voor het
lengtemeten schreef Worsop:
Dat deze 'lijn van draden' daadwer
kelijk een meetketting was, wordt
duidelijk als in 1590 Cyprian Lucar
deze in zijn werk A Treatise Named
Lucarsolace met het bijschrift
"A wyer line" laat zien (zie afb. 1).17
Als we kijken naar Duitsland, dan
zien we dat Matthias Nefe in 1591
aangaf dat hij zum Aufmessen
ein Ele eine Rutte oder Stange und
eine Eyserne Kette..." (een el, een
roede of stang, en een ijzeren meet-
ketting) gebruikte.18 Ruim een de
cennium eerder, in 1579, was het
