Kadaster en Landmeetkunde in de Literatuur

door W. Koopmans, oud-ambtenaar van het kadaster
Een vriend maakte mij opmerkzaam op één
van de werkjes van de Amerikaan A. M. S u 1-
1 i v a n, die verschillende gedichtenbundels
op zijn naam heeft staan. Wij noemen Pro
gressions and other poems, Ballad of a man
named Smith, This day and age en de bundel
Stars and Atoms have no size, met de elas
tische ondertitel: Poems of science and in
dustry in 1946 uitgegeven te New York bij
E. P. Dutton Co., aan welke verzameling
het hiernavolgende „The Survey" is ont
leend. In het voorwoord geeft Sullivan een
kort overzicht van de stijgende belangstelling
onder opvolgende dichters voor techniek,
wetenschap en industrie.
Sommige van zijn gedichten zijn voornamelijk
technisch, andere symbolisch of metafysisch,
weer andere van plaatselijke betekenis. Er zijn
bij-de-tijdse en oude. In ,,The Survey" volgen
wij een landmeter, die aan de hand van de
grensbeschrijving in een oude akte de grenzen
van een stuk land uitzet. Tussen de authentie
ke brokken tekst laat Sullivan de geschiedenis
van de streek herleven
The Survey
„The stakes have clung to the side of the hill
Longer than the grip of the man who drove
them,"
Said the young surveyor leveling his sights
And waving his hand to the boy with the pole.
He rolled up his tape, and we set out together
To measure the land that my father held
In the reach of his eye till the darkness came.
The deed reads thus in links and chains:
.Begins at the wall by the black oak tree
At the corner of the land of Peter McGown,
Runs thence by his line north sixty degrees
West fourteen chains to corner of the fence."
We found the tree, or rather the shell,
Pushed by the wind down a perilous slope
Pointing due south to a swamp of maples.
There Peter McGown split his foot with an
axe
And crawled two miles followed by the dogs
And he brained a beast that lapped his blood.
There's no McGown left here in the valley
Since Peter's tall son went off to the war
And died of the fever in a Cuban camp.
..South forty degrees, then west one chain
And twenty-six links to a limestone boulder."
We plunged in the thicket where no axe has
fallen
Nigh forty years and the birch trees build
A white palisade of a thousand poles
Zo gaan we langs laagten en hoogten, langs
wagensporen en over de stroom naar de
spoorbrug, over de veedrift naar de grote wilg
en andere kenmerken, vier bladzijden lang.
Tot slot volgt:
.South fifty degrees and west ten chains
And eighty-four links to place of Beginning
Describing one hundred acres of land."
„Accurate enough," said the young surveyor
Driving a pipe three feet from the wall
Where old Black oak lies charred by a fire
That crept last Autumn to edge of a swamp.
„But isn't folly," I asked with a shrug,
„To mention trees as a boundary point?"
„Yes he said, „since men are eager
To hold every inch of the land in their fingers,
But no harm's done when we have the transit,
The horizon and Euclid to give us the angles,
And gravity to plumb the bob toward center.
The tree will stand on the pivotal spot
Longer than the names men scratch on paper,
And moss on the stones that mark the corner
Will cling as long as the word on granite."
Zoals Walt Whitman dichtte over de loco
motief en Emerson over de scheepsbouw, zo
dichtte A. M. Sullivan over verschillende
instrumenten. In de bundel .Stars and Atoms
have no size komen ook de hiervolgende ge
dichten voor:
Compass
The steel splinter
Floats in a pool of light
And aims past Baffin Land
To the remnant isles
Where the lodestone fell
And spattered the map
Like a broken mirror.
