The finger in the binnacle
Quivers at the pull
Of lesser magnets
Under the skin of earth.
Wavers and returns again
To the summons from Franklin Strait,
Ninety-sixth meridian
Under Fort Ross.
The needle points,
Not at the hub of the world
That glistened for Peary
Nor the axle that spun
Invisible to eyes of Richard Byrd
But at the iron core of earth
Off center as the throb of being
In the breast of men.
Sextant
Euclid devised the trap
By which the sailor's eye
Captures the angle of light
To mark his compass by
And he follows the dancing sun
Over the arc of sky.
Though waters be dark and strange
Heaven's a familiar place
As the map of the stars unroll
To the man who measures space
With the light on a thousand suns
Burning upon his face.
The pioneer in the valley
Was a man of a sterling breed,
With the transit, level and bob
He staked the angles of need
But the acres of sovereign water
Are written in no deed.
Lost with the churn of the wheel
And the glow of the phosphor wick
Is the ship that fades in the mist
But the sailor has learned the trick
Of steering home with a star
And the end of a golden stick.
Regionale bijeenkomst Arnhem
Op woensdag 28 november a.s. houden we
onze eerste regionale bijeenkomst in dit sei
zoen in Hotel-Restaurant Carnegie, Stations
plein, Arnhem.
Ir. W. Bakker, Hoofdingenieur van de
Provinciale Waterstaat in Drenthe, Hoofd
van de Landmeetkundige Afdeling, zal spre
ken over:
DETAILMETING.
In deze lezing zal vooral aandacht worden
besteed aan het uitvoeren van controle
metingen en aan de eisen die de H.T.W. aan
een meting stelt.
De bijeenkomst vangt aan om 20.00 uur.

Als mededelingen genummerd 30 is het jaar
verslag van de N.H.M. over 1961 versche
nen. Zoals reeds enkele jaren gebruikelijk, is
ook dit verslag geen opsomming van gebeur
tenissen en feiten met de daarop betrekking
hebbende getallen, maar is er getracht een
bepaald aspect van het werk van de N.H.M.
onder de aandacht te brengen. In dit verslag
worden de grotere opgeleverde werken be
licht, waarbij bijzondere aandacht wordt be
steed aan waterbeheersingswerken.
„Wij achten het nuttig dat ook in dit verslag
nog eens weer de aandacht wordt gevestigd
op het grote belang van een goede water
beheersing.
