graaf schapskaarten.
Als men het werk van Saxton ziet in samen
hang met dat van figuren als Nocolas Sanson,
Alexis Jaillot, Cassini, de Ferraris, Cary e.a.,
dan illustreert het wel de kartografische periode
van deze voorbije eeuwen. Het moet worden
betreurd, dat veel van zijn kaarten geen onder
tekening dragen, immers nu gaan vooral de gra
veurs, als daarmee verbonden, de historie in.
De grote inspanning van landmeters, tekenaars
en graveurs is door het hele oeuvre voelbaar;
er is schoonheid te waarderen en er is iets van
wetenschappelijke ontwikkeling uit af te lei
den. Voor de historicus is het interessant, langs
kartografische weg het gezicht van dit land on
der de regering van koningin Elisabeth te bestu
deren. De historische kartografie blijft instruc
tief en fascinerend!
