Naturally, such a set of advanced performances calls for
many fields of applications: geodesy, geophysics, navi

engineering.and probably many others.
7. Conclusions
In a general sense, it is the opinion of many scientists
that the GPS system is called to replace the TRANSIT
system, but military constraints could reduce its efficien
cy for absolute positioning and long baseline determina
tions [Parkinson et al, 1983]. For short baselines, GPS
yields results which are equivalent or are better than
those obtained with terrestrial operations. For absolute
positioning and baselines ranging between 200 and 2 000
km the TRANSIT system is still the best in current use;
the first set of co-ordinates obtained with NOVA is very
promising. But the TRANSIT system is supposed to be
out of operation in 1994.
These considerations leave the possibility or even the
necessity for a third system which is the European
POPSAT proposal. It will have the same capabilities as
GPS but the absolute positioning over longer distances
will be quite better.
The NOVA satellites are a good intermediate step be
tween the end of operation of the TRANSIT satellites
and a first launch of a POPSAT. One may therefore
hope that, in not too far a future, the European project
becomes a reality. Such a satellite has a very extended
field of application. Ideally, a first launch should not be

TRANSIT System genoemd.
7 km/sec., zodat de omlooptijd circa 107 minuten be-

by these dedicated satellites.

draagt.
In 1967 is
het TRANSIT System vrijgegeven voor civiele toepas
singen. De oudere satellieten worden geleidelijk door
nieuwe en meer moderne vervangen. Hun omloopbaan
wordt beter beheerst, zodat de plaatsbepaling aan
nauwkeurigheid wint.
breedte waarop men zich bevindt. Aan de polen kan
men vijftig bruikbare passages per etmaal verwachten,
aan de equator ongeveer 10.

SUMMARY
The study group „Doppler Satellite Observations of the National Geodetic Commission"
This is a report of the above mentioned study group. For those of the readers who are not quite familiar
with Doppler Satellite Positioning a short review is given of the basic concepts and the developments
abroad, before the actual activities of the study group are discussed.
