KNOWLEDGE ON GEOINFORMA-
TION MANAGEMENT FOR
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
One of mankind's greatest chal
lenges is achieving an appropriate
balance between the development of
natural resources and maintaining an
optimal natural environment. To meet
this challenge, we need detailed and
reliable geoinformation and geoinfor-
mation management tools. At the
International Institute for Aerospace
Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC),
knowledge of geoinformation manage
ment is amply available, and continual
ly being developed and extended.
By means of education, research and
consulting, we contribute to capacity-
building in the developing world.
Much attention is given to the transfer
of technologies to organizations in
developing countries. 'Geoinformation
management', 'worldwide' and 'innova
tive' are our key words. We concentrate
on earth observation, the generation of
spatial information and on the develop
ment of data integration methods.
We provide tools that can support the
processes of planning and decision
making for sustainable development
and the alleviation of poverty in develop
ing countries. The Institute has a scien
tific staff of some 200 professionals of
25 nationalities. Since 1950 more than
