ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (UD) IN TOPOGRAPHIC CARTOGRAPHY 532 1997'U GEODESIA INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FORAEROSPACE SURVEYAND EARTH SCIENCES ITC DEVELOPS AND TRANSFERS KNOWLEDGE ON GEOINFORMA- TION MANAGEMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT One of mankind's greatest chal lenges is achieving an appropriate balance between the development of natural resources and maintaining an optimal natural environment. To meet this challenge, we need detailed and reliable geoinformation and geoinfor- mation management tools. At the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC), knowledge of geoinformation manage ment is amply available, and continual ly being developed and extended. By means of education, research and consulting, we contribute to capacity- building in the developing world. Much attention is given to the transfer of technologies to organizations in developing countries. 'Geoinformation management', 'worldwide' and 'innova tive' are our key words. We concentrate on earth observation, the generation of spatial information and on the develop ment of data integration methods. We provide tools that can support the processes of planning and decision making for sustainable development and the alleviation of poverty in develop ing countries. The Institute has a scien tific staff of some 200 professionals of 25 nationalities. Since 1950 more than 11,500 students from over 150 countries have followed one of ITC's 40 courses leading to PhD and MSc degrees and postgraduate diplomas. The Geoinformatics Department is offering the following vacancy in the academic Chair of Cartography MAIN TASKS Under the general direction of the Professor in Cartography - initiate, execute and participate in research, education and consulting programmes in cartography in general and in digital topographic cartogra phy in particular; - direct and participate in the develop ment of educational materials for topographic cartography courses at Diploma, Professional Master and Master of Science Level; - (co-)supervise case studies and thesis/research work of ITC-students at Msc level; - keep up-to-date with (scientific and technological) developments in car tography and in the field of special ization; - actively participate in national and international professional associa tions. REQUIREMENTS - PhD or equivalent in geodesy with, preferably, a specialization in car tography, combined with a good publishing record; - practical experience with digital topo graphic cartography in a topographic mapping organization; - education experience; - research experience in the field of digital topographic cartography; - comprehensive knowledge of the field of geoinformatics; - strong interest in developing cost effec tive solutions relevant to a large variety of problems in developing countries; - demonstrated ability to participate in interdisciplinary project teams; - demonstrated ability to work effec tively in a multicultural and interna tional environment.
