Summary
Geoshop: a multi-server Internet GIS
This article describes a pilot project where clients can select,
view and use geographic information from different spatial
database servers using the current Internet infrastructure. A
specially developed GIS-browser Lava-Magma guarantees
complete transparency for the user with regard to different
types of data-management, GIS-tools, exchange formats or
database-technology. The user only needs a standard internet
browser (Netscape or Microsoft Explo
rer). The GIS-functionality is realized
by a platform-independant Java applet.
The pilot shows that geo-data can easyly
be made accessible to everybody and can
be integrated with different user-appli
cations. A very promising experiment.
