WGS84.

The position of the Dutch national
reference system in Europe
Modern satellite positioning techniques
have had a big impact on global refer
ence systems. Although since 1980 VLBI
and SLR were important for the defini
tion of the International Terrestrial Re
ference System (ITRS), it was not until
the establishment of the International
GPS Service, in 1992, that ITRS really
took off. Recognising that all European
stations have more or less the same
motion in ITRS, the subcommission for
Europe of the IAG (EUREF) introduced
in 1989 a new reference system for
Europe, ETRS89, that is identical to
ITRS at epoch 1989.0, but moves along
with the European plate. This system has
become the de facto standard for spatial
reference systems in Europe, and has
now been adopted by several European
countries and organisations. This year,
the definition of the Dutch national sys
tem, will be formally based on ETRS89.
