Summary
The value of geographical data sets
Value of control may be a useful concept when deciding upon the
best spatial data set for applications where uncertainty is due to er
ror in the reported data. Its application demands probabilistic ac
curacy measures and a loss function representing the cost of incor
rect judgement about some target property. This is illustrated by as
sessing the suitability of two digital elevation models (DEMs) for
computing the volume of sand required for building a container
port. To demonstrate flexibility of the approach, accuracy assess
ment was based on both a random, and a systematic sample of er
ror vectors, using classical sampling theory and geostatistics. Ope
rational practicability of the method is dependent on the willing
ness of database producers to give access to sample data similar to
e.g. the quick looks provided to potential users of remote sensing
imagery.

Haro Hiellceman verzorgde voor het
dagblad Trouw van 23 januari 2001
op de pagina 'de Verdieping' een bij
drage over de afronding van de
GBKN-vervaardiging onder de subkop
'Kartering'. Een volle bladzijde met
als streamer "Alle steunberen van de
Sintjan zijn zichtbaar". In het terrein
is dat al eeuwen zo, maar hij zal be
doelen dat ze ook op de GBKN staan.
GBKN-nacalculatie lijkt moeilijk: "Hij
heeft maar liefst vijfhonderd tot zes
honderd miljoen gekost" meldt de
eerste zin al. De 'aardappelhoek van
Friesland', Het Bildt, werd in 1975 als
eerste gekarteerd. Het werk schoot
niet erg op. "Veel gekakel, weinig
eieren", werd er in 1990 opgemerkt.
Dat de GBKN als kerntaak van het Ka
daster werd geschrapt, was "een kou
de douche die in dit geval een gezond
medicijn bleek". Regionaal ontston
den samenwerkingsverbanden - met
ook het geprivatiseerde Kadaster - en
ook stapten gemeenten die zelf aan
kartering deden, op de GBKN-trein.
Ir. L. Murre, sinds 1999 directeur
secretaris van LSV GBKN, wordt in het
artikel uitgebreid geciteerd over het
'unicum in de wereld'. De GBKN
wordt overigens in grote letters aan
geduid als 'De kaart van de stoep
tegels'. De GBKN is geen kaart voor
particulieren, al zijn voorbeelden
van de kaart (en in de toekomst wel
licht de hele kaart) via internet te
raadplegen: www.gbkn.nl. Al met al
geeft deze krantenpagina een breed
publiek een goed overzicht van ver
leden en toekomst van de GBKN.
