An overview of the current state of the start
in generalisation at twelve National Map
ping Agencies (NMAs). Which NMA applies
which approach to generalisation? Which
research findings are applied in operatio
nal usage? In what fields is further research
required? The way in which the generalisa
tion process operates is largely dependent of
various NMA-specific factors. An internatio
nal, generic approach of the generalisation
problem may assist individual NMAs to de
cide what steps to take, partly based on ex
periences of other NMAs. The science com
munity may further assist by tackling fun
damental research themes.

Samenvatting
Generalisatie in de praktijk
Een overzicht van de stand van zaken betreffende generalisatie bij
twaalf National Mapping Agencies (NMAs). Welke NMA gebruikt
welke benadering bij generalisatie? Welke onderzoeksresultaten
worden in de praktijk toegepast? En op welke gebieden is nader
onderzoek gewenst? De manier waarop het generalisatieproces
wordt opgepakt is in belangrijke mate afhankelijk van allerlei
NMA-specifieke factoren. Een internationale, algemene benadering
van het generalisatieprobleem kan individuele NMAs helpen om te
beslissen over welke stappen te nemen, mede gebaseerd op ervarin
gen van andere NMAs. De wetenschap kan hierin helpen door het
(verder) aanpakken van fundamentele onderzoeksthema's.

Generalisation en pratique
Dans 1'article on a fait, pour douze agences
cartographiques nationales, Vétat des lieux
de l'automatisation. Quelle approche dans
chacune des agences? Quels résultats de re
cherche sont utilisés? Dans quels domaines
faut il approfondir? La méthodologie de ge
neralisation apparait fortement dépendan-
te des spécificités des agences. Une nomen
clature internationale dans les méthodes de
généralisation aiderait fortement les agen
ces individuelles. La science peut aider en
développant quelques thèmes fondamen-
taux de recherche.
