Space-time research at the ITC
ITC, het Internationale Instituut voor Geo-Informatie en
Aardobservatie heeft als doelstelling om via de ontwik
keling en uitwisseling van kennis op het gebied van geo-in-
formatie en aardobservatie de capaciteit van organisaties
te vergroten. De kartografie draagt aan dit doel bij. Naast
onderwijs is onderzoek een belangrijk onderdeel in deze
kennistransfer. In de bovenstaande afbeelding worden voor
beelden van kartografisch promotieonderzoek getoond.
Het probleem van hoe verandering te visualiseren drijft het
onderzoek. Met gebruik van kennis van andere disciplines
worden alternatieve kaartrepresentaties ontworpen en ge
test op bruikbaarheid. Het gaat hierbij bijvoorbeeld om ani
maties, series kaartjes, de ruimte-tij d-kubus en andere met
de kaart verbonden grafische representaties. Zo toont de
afbeelding van linksboven met de klok mee onder andere
een animatie van Napoleons tocht naar Rusland, een 'self
organizing map van Afrika', een ruimte-tij d-kubus met de
verspreiding van de Zwarte Dood in middeleeuws Europa
en enkele parallelcoördinaat-plotten en -grafieken.
ITC, the International Institute for Geo-Information Sci
ence and Earth Observation aims at capacity building
by means of developing and exchanging knowledge in the
field of geo-information science and earth observation. Car
tography contributes to this objective. Besides education,
research is an important ingredient in the knowledge trans
fer. In the above illustration samples of cartographic PhD
research are given. The problem of how to visualize proces
ses of change, e.g. the display of spatio-temporal data drives
the research. With input from other disciplines alternative
map representations are created and tested on their usabi
lity. Among them animations, sets of small multiples, the
space-time cube and other related linked graphics. The ima
ge shows an animation of Napoleon's campaign to Russia,
the self-organising map of Africa, a space-time cube of the
sprawl of the Black Death through medieval Europe and a
few paralel-coordinate plots and graphics.
