De Nationale Atlas Volksgezondheid (Zorgatlas in de
volksmond) is al ruim zes jaar een begrip in gezond-
heidsland. De website wordt gemaakt door het Rijksinsti
tuut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) in opdracht
van het ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport.
Samen met het Nationaal Kompas Volksgezondheid (www.
nationaalkompas.nl) geeft de website een integraal beeld
van de stand van de volksgezondheid in Nederland en alle
factoren die daarop van invloed zijn. De Zorgatlas geeft een
geografisch beeld van de volksgezondheid en de gezond
heidszorg, waarbij kaarten centraal staan. De Atlas geeft
antwoord op vele 'waar'-vragen: Waar bevinden zich de
ziekenhuizen? Waar is de sterfte het hoogst? Waar onder
vindt men de meeste geluidsoverlast? Waar zijn mensen het
zwaarst? Waar is de reistijd naar de spoedeisende hulp (te)
lang?
In de Zorgatlas zijn inmiddels meer dan duizend kaarten
beschikbaar die allemaal met elkaar vergeleken kunnen
worden. Kaarten worden begeleid door tekst, achtergrond
kaarten en -documenten. Door in de kaart op een gebied of
locatie te klikken, verschijnt in een venster aanvullende in
formatie. Alle kaarten zijn gemaakt met eenzelfde lay-out,
schaal- en generalisatieniveau. Door de gebruikers wordt
dit als rustig, overzichtelijk en gebruiksvriendelijk ervaren.
De doelgroep van de site is relatief klein. Het gaat om de be
leidsmakers op het terrein van volksgezondheid en zorg. De
gebruikersgroep is echter veel groter. Veel zorgaanbieders,
journalisten en onderzoelcs- en opleidingsinstituten heb
ben de weg naar de site gevonden.
The National Atlas of Public Health has been an authority
over the last six years among health care professionals.
The website is a product of the National Institute of Public
Health and the Environment and is commissioned by the
Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. Together with the
National Compass of Public Health (www.nationaalkompas.
nl), the website provides a comprehensive insight into the
public health status in the Netherlands and its determining
factors. The Atlas provides a geographic presentation of the
public health and health care, giving maps a pivotal role.
Thus, the Atlas provides answers to locational questions, e.
g. 'Where are the highest mortality rates?', 'Where are the
longest waiting lists?' and 'Where are hospitals located?'.
The Atlas contains over a thousand maps that can all be
compared. Maps are accompanied by explanatory texts,
background maps and background documentation. Users
can click on locations and areas on the map to obtain
further information about the objects on the map. All maps
are created using a consistent layout, scale and level of ge
neralization. Users find this approach results in pleasing,
clear and user-friendly maps. The target audience is relati
vely small: policy makers in the area of public health and
health care. However, the user audience is much larger.
Many health care providers, journalists and research and
educational institutes are using the atlas.
