Nationaal rapport voor de 14e algemene vergadering van de
Internationale Kartografische Associatie
Kartografie in Nederland kent een lange traditie. Vandaag de dag
wordt deze traditie vertegenwoordigd door onze vereniging 'Geo-
Informatie Nederland' (GIN). Deze ontstond in 2003 door het sa
mengaan van verschillende geo-informatie-gerelateerde vereni
gingen, waaronder de 'Nederlandse Vereniging voor Kartografie'
(NVK). De hoofdredenen voor de verenigingen om de krachten te
bundelen waren de overlappende interesse en activiteiten voor
geo-informatie. GIN wil een ontmoetingsplaats en een kennis
netwerk vormen voor iedereen die zich professioneel bezighoudt
met geo-informatie. GIN organiseert daartoe activiteiten ter
ontplooiing van de individuele leden en ter versterking van de
positie van het vakgebied geo-informatie in de maatschappijDe
vereniging heeft bijna 4000 leden. Binnen de vereniging bestaan
diverse secties die elk een bepaald aspect van de geo-informatie
vertegenwoordigen. De sectie Kartografie en Geovisualisatie ver
tegenwoordigt de kartografie.
Dit Nationale Rapport bestaat uit twee delen, een speciaal num
mer van het tijdschrift 'Geo-Info' en een website (www.geo-info.
nl). Het feit dat het Nationale Rapport zowel een webversie als
een papieren versie kent is tekenend voor de trend in de karto
grafie gedurende de laatste vier jaar. Steeds vaker houden kaart-
series op papier op te bestaan en verhuizen naar het web waar ze
als interactieve kaarten beschikbaar zijn. Dit heeft zowel voor- als
nadelen. Een voordeel is dat de kaarten nu -veelal gratis- beschik
baar zijn voor iedereen met toegang tot het internet, hoewel dat
nog niet wil zeggen dat iedereen die kaarten ook kan vinden.
Een nadeel is dat het kaartbeeld in de browser vaak erg klein is,
ondanks dat men het beeld kan vergroten of verkleinen en kan
verplaatsen. Een kaart op papier is nog steeds beter in het geven
van een goed overzicht. Een andere trend is dat veel organisaties
het internet ook gebruiken om historisch kaartmateriaal te ont
sluiten. Zo zijn de eerste kadastrale kaarten alsook kaarten van
Blaeu te bekijken tot in alle details. Ook uitgevers zien een markt
in de uitgaven van facsimile versies van dit kaartmateriaal.
Het is onmogelijk om in dit rapport alle organisaties, instituten
en bedrijven die kaarten produceren op te nemen. Het Nationale
Rapport geeft evenwel een goede doorsnede van wat de Neder
landse kartografie momenteel te bieden heeft. De bijdragen zijn
gebaseerd op een oproep materiaal aan te leveren waarbij oude
nummers van Geo-Info mede als selectiecriterium zijn gebruikt,
en bevatten kaarten van overheidsinstellingen, bedrijven en on
derwijsinstellingen. De website en het tijdschrift bevatten het
zelfde materiaal. Voor elk product is er een titel, een kaartfrag-
ment, een korte beschrijving in het Nederlands en het Engels en
een weblink naar de producent van de kaart. Vaak is deze website
alleen in het Nederlands toegankelijk. De producten die getoond
worden zijn scans van papieren kaarten of beeldschermafbeel
dingen van weblcaarten.

National report to the 14th general assemblee of the Internatio
nal Cartographic Association
Cartography has a very long tradition in the Netherlands. Today,
this tradition is represented by the society "Geo-Information Ne
derland" (GIN) which, in 2003 resulted front a merger of several
geo-information related societies, among them the "Nederland
se Vereniging voor Kartografie" (NVK). The main reason for the
merger was the convergence of interests and activities among
the societies towards geo-information at large. GIN aims to be a
meeting place and a knowledge network for everyone professio
nally engaged in geo-information. To meet these objectives, GIN
organizes activities that facilitate the development of its indivi
dual members and strengthen the position of the geo-informa
tion discipline in society. Currently, GIN has almost 4000 mem
bers. There are various sections within GIN representing specific
aspects of geo-information. The section "Cartography and Geovi-
sualization" represents the realm of Cartography.
This National Report consists of two parts: a special issue of the
journal 'Geo-Info' and a website. This National Report being co
vered by both a paper and web version is indicative for the trend
in mapping over the last four years. The number of map series
available in print is decreasing, because they are more and more
published as interactive web maps. There are both advantages
and disadvantages. On the one hand, these maps become - often
freely - available to everyone with Internet access, although not
everyone is aware or able to. On the other hand, map images in
web browser are often very small, requiring additional map navi
gation tools. Paper maps are still better in providing an overview.
Another trend in mapping is the online publication of historical
maps. The first cadastral maps as well as maps of Blaeu can be
viewed online in the highest detail. Still, print publishers see a
market in facsimile editions of these maps as well.
It is almost impossible for the contributions in the national re
port to provide an all-encompassing impression of all organiza
tions, institutes and companies producing maps in the Nether
lands. However, this report does give an overview of what Dutch
cartography has to offer and is based on an open call for contri
bution. It includes products from governmental organizations,
commercial firms and educational institutes. Both the website
and the journal contain the same information. Each description
of a cartographic product conies with a map title, a detail of the
map, a short description in Dutch and English, and a hyperlink.
This hyperlink guides the reader to the main website of the pro
ducer. Often, these websites are available in Dutch only. The pro
ducts shown are either scans of paper map products or screen
grabs of a web map.
