Vegetatiekartering
Vegetation mapping
vegetatietypen in beeld gebracht.
A vegetation type or plant community is a group of plants
located closely together in a specific environment. The
composition of species and the spatial patterns of vegetati
on types are an important aspect of biodiversity. The vegeta
tion determines to a large extent the potential as a habitat
or as food for animals. Besides, the various vegetation types
and their composition of species are an important indicator
for the environmental conditions. For the majority of Euro
pean countries, a national inventory of vegetation types is
available.
The vegetation mapping is the process of visualizing the
spatial distribution of vegetation types using stereoscopic
aerial imagery. The composition of species of the various
vegetation types is determined in situ and related to the
spatial patterns. The end result is a vegetation map. Com
missioned by the National Institute for Coastal and Marine
Management, all Dutch coastal wet lands are regularly map
ped by the Advisory Department Geo-Information and ICT
as part of the longitudinal monitoring programme. Based
on change maps, the development of the vegetation is visu
alized. Therefore, change analysis is a tool to monitor the
policies.
