tems Institute in samenwerking metThales Nederland, kaarten

TThe North Sea off the Dutch coast is a intensively sailed area,
in particular around the port of Rotterdam. While monitoring
maritime traffic, surveillance operators look for safety and security
violations, like collisions and smuggling operations. One of the
approaches to find some of these violations is by comparing current
maritime movements with historical movements, that represent
normal behaviour.Researchers from the Visualization group of the
Embedded Systems Institute at Eindhoven University of Technology
work within the Poseidon project (www.esi.nl/poseidon) in coop
eration with Thales Netherlands on maps that show this normal
behaviour by means of density maps. The density represents the
time that a ship needs to pass a certain location.By means of two
density maps at different scales we can see sea lanes (coloured
roads) and anchoring zones (groups of black dots). These maps can
be used as background maps on top of which the current move
ment of ships can be overlaid. More info www.win.tue.nl/~cwiliems.
