Sailing for the East
Sailing for the East, het overzicht van door de VOC geproduceerde
manuscriptkaarten van Günter Schilder en Hans Kok in het kader
van Explokart, het onderzoekprogramma voor de geschiedenis
van de kartografie aan de Universiteit Utrecht, is een innovatieve
publicatie. Dit omdat, naast het kartobibliografische overzicht, het
materiaal chronologisch geordend is voor twintig gebieden zodat
de veranderingen in opeenvolgende manuscriptkaarten duidelijk
worden, zowel wat topografie als toponymie betreft. Daardoor is er
meteen een geschiedenis van de exploratie van Oost-Azië in de 17e
en 18e eeuw uit af te leiden. De veranderingen in de opeenvolgende
edities van de manuscriptkaarten worden niet alleen beschreven en
in perspectief geplaatst maar ze visualiseren ook wijzigingen in de
kartografische stijl.
De VOC beschikte over eigen kaartenmakerswerkplaatsen, zowel in
patria als in Batavia. In het inleidende deel worden deze kartogra
fische werkplaatsen, de kartografen en hun praktijken beschreven
evenals de manier waarop hydrografische informatie werd verzameld
en verwerkt. Daarnaasi wordt het institutionele kader van deze werk
zaamheden in perspectief geplaatst door alle voorde kaartproductie
relevante resoluties en instructies van de VOC op bijgevoegde cd-
rom weer te geven, alsmede lijsten van instrumenten en kaarten die
in de verschillende perioden aan VOC-schepen werden meegegeven.
Sailing for the East, the overview of manuscript charts produced
by the VOC (Dutch East India Company, 1602-1799) by Günter
Schilder and Hans Kok in the context of Explokart - the Utrecht
University research programme for the History of Cartography -
is an innovative publication. Apart from the cartobibliographic
overview, the maps of approximately 20 different regions have been
chronologically binded. As a resultnot only does the development
of the map representation stand out, but it also conveys a history
of East Asian exploration in the 17th and 18th century. Changes in
the topography or toponymy of the consecutive editions of these
manuscript maps have been commented upon and put in perspec
tive. At the same time, changes in the style of cartographic represen
tation are visualized.
The VOC had its own mapping establishments, both in the Nether
lands and in its Asian headquarters in Batavia. In the introductory
sections these mapping establishments, their personnel and prac
tices have been described, the manner in which nautical information
was gathered and processed, as well as the institutional framework.
The accompanying CD-ROM contains all relevant VOC resolutions
and instructions on charting and chart distribution.
