De Hollandse waterlinie is een verdedigingssysteem van samen
hangende forten, dijken, kanalen en inundatiegebieden dat
het westen van Nederland in tijden van oorlog moest beschermen.
Nu is de waterlinie uit het eind van de 19e eeuw zelf een beschermd
gebied.
De kaart toont een deel van de linie die loopt van het eiland
Pampus nabij Amsterdam tot aan de Biesbosch in het zuiden.
De concentrische cirkels tonen het schootsveld van de forten.
Buiten het schootsveld zou in tijden van dreiging het land onder
water worden gezet.
Een van de forten (Fort aan de Nieuwe Steeg - in het zuidoosten
van de kaart) wordt momenteel ingericht als het zogenaamde
GeoFort. GeoFort is een'Living GeoLab'in oprichting gericht op
kartografie, navigatie en geo-simulaties en gaat in 2012 open
voor het publiek (www.geofort.nl).
De inzet toont het zogenaamde eiland van Schalkwijk nabij het
huidige Culemborg aan de Lek. Hier is goed te zien hoe de forten
aan beide zijden van de rivier elkaar versterken.
De Holland Waterline is a former defense system of fortifica
tions, dykes, canals, and inundation areas to protect the
western part of the Netherlands at war time. Currently, the 19th
century defense system is a protected heritage site.
De map shows parts of the line from the Pampus island near
Amsterdam to the Biesbosch marshlands in the south.The con
centric circles show the firing ranges of the fortifications. Outside
the firing ranges the land would be inundated in times of danger.
One of the fortifications (Fort aan de Nieuwe Steeg - in the south
east of the map) is called GeoFort, a "Living GeoLab" focusing on
cartography, navigation and geo-simuiations. It will open to the
public in 2012 (www.geofort.nl).
The inset map shows the Schalkwijk island near the town of
Culemborg at the river Lek. It clearly shows how all fortifications
are connected to support each other.
