ventory was sold. Probably Joh. Janssonius obtained that of Denmark. This map does not agree
with that in the description by Wieder of what he calls the 'possibly unique maps' in a volume
called 'Varios num. 1' of the Royal Library in Madrid li.
13. Nova Polonia delineatio. Amstelodami ex officina et sumptibus Iudoci Hondii. 41,2 x
56,3 cm. In the Upper border three town views of 'Dantzik, Cracovia, Breslaw'. In the lower border
four views of 'Posnania, Sandomiria, Crosno, Biecz'. In the side borders three figures showing dif-
ferent dresses (fig. 6). No link with existing references on this map has yet been made.
14. Nova et recens emendata totius regni Ungariae una cum adjacentibus et jinitimis regionibus
delineatio. C. J. Visscher. In a frame: Vera delineatio accurataq. Tabula totius Regni Ungarici
Regionumq. ei adjacentiu. asscriptis precipui nominis urbibus tempore quo a Turcis capta sunt.
Joannes Duetechum Jun. fecit. C. J. Visscher excudebat anno 1624. In the lower margin:
Oppida omnia et propagnacula hoc signo notata a turcis occupata sunt: christianorum autem
urbes hac nota. 35,2 x 53,1 cm. This is the map, found by Wieder in a volume 'Varios
num. 1' in the Royal Library in Madrid 13. Wieder displayed a big enthousiasm in describing the
quality and rarity of the maps in that volume. In Our opinion, this kind of map is important indeed,
as it precedes the period of Dutch atlasmaking, but it is not necessary to allude to 'unica'. The main
bibliographical aspect of this map of Hungary is, that it shows how C. J. Visscher obtained the
copperplate from Corn. Nicol. Cornelis Claesz.) of Amsterdam and issued the engraving
unaltered under his own name.
19. Tabula Electoratus BrandenburgiciN. J. Piccatore anno 1630. A. Goos sculpsit. This
map has been included in the edition of 1631 of the Atlantis Appendix. See Keuning's list, map
nr 68.
40. Novissima et accuratissima Brabantiae ducatus tabula. Amstelodami sumptibus Henrici
Hondii, habitantis in Damo ad intersigne Atlantis. Anno 1629. Comparison of this map by Hen-
ricus Hondius with the map of 'Brabantiae Ducatus' by W. J. Blaeu (Keuning's list nr 78)
shows that both maps cover the same area, are on the same scaie, but that Blaeu's map has been
re-engraved. This original by Henricus Hondius is found in the Mercator-Hondius atlas after
1630 16.
43. Limburgensis ducatus. Nova descriptio Auetore Aegidio Martini Anno 1616. C. J. Visscher
exeud. 1625. Is identical with the map of Limburg in Petrus Kaerius' atlas Germaniae inferior,
Amsterdam 1617. Only the signature 'P. Kaerius exc. 1616' has been substituted by 'C. J. Visscher
exeud. 1625'.
44. Lutzenburgensis Ducatus veriss. descript. Jacobo Surhonio Monta auet. C. J. Visscher
Exeu. Anno 1625. Is identical with the map of Luxemburg in Petrus Kaerius' atlas 'Germaniae
inferior', Amsterdam, 1617. Only the signature 'P. Kaerius exc. Amstelodami 1617' has been sub
stituted by 'C. J. Visscher excu. anno 1625'. The plates 14, 43 and 44 reveal us that maps, signed
by C. J. Visscher, are not always Originals, but often reprints of copperplates, bought by him from
other engravers.
45. Ducatus Geldriae novissima descriptio. Auetore Balthazaro Flor. A. Berckenrode. Am
stelodami, sumptibus et typis aeneis Henrici Hondii Anno Domini 1629. A. Goos sculpsit. This
map has been included in the Mercator-Hondius atlas after 1630.
46. Comitalus Hollandiae novissima descriptio. Designatore Balthazaro Florentin a Bercken
rode Anno domini 1629. Cum privilegio Amstelodami, Sumptibus Henrici Hondii habitantis
in Damo ad intersigne Atlantis. Salomon Rogiers sculpsit. This is the map of Holland as included
in the Mercator-Hondius atlas of the years after 1629.
53. Kaerte van Sluys, het Zwin, ende de Schansen aen weder syden. Uitgegeven ende gedruckt
by Claes Jansz. Visscher 't jaer 1627 (fig. 5). Maps of this character, published by C. J. Vis
scher, illustrating military Operations are found in print-collections of historical subjects. This map
is in the collection of Frederik Muller, in the State Printroom at Amsterdam (no 1508) and in
the Atlas van Stolk at Rotterdam.
55. Carte des costes de Poictu Aulnis de la Rochelle et de l'lsle de Re avecq ces forts. A la Haye
chez Henry Hondius 1627. This is map nr 38 of the 1629-collection, used as a base for the Atlantis
Appendix17. This plate, however was not used before its publication in the Atlas Major of 1662.
59. Alpinae seu foederatae Rhaetiae sub-ditarumque ei terrarum nova descriptio auetoribus
C. J. Visscher excudebat anno 1625. Comparison with map nr 58 of the same title in this copy of
the Atlantis Appendix (Keuning's list nr 44) shows that area and scale are similar, but that
Blaeu's map has been re-engraved. C. J. Visscher's map of 1625 has served as a model for it.
