published. This is explained by the fact that various countries follow different
principles in compilation of glossaries.
Nevertheless the success of compilation of polyglot dictionary-glossary of carto-
graphic terms, which is the chief task of Commission II of the International Carto-
graphic Association, depends greatly upon the coordination of activities of the
national terminological commissions and working groups organized recently in
many members-countries of the ICA. The recommendations elaborated at the
meetings of Commission II in 1965 and 1966 and distributed by Prof. meynen among
all members of the Commission, favour formation of common views on our
work. However for the sake of further improvement of the matter it is rather useful
to exchange information and experience on the principal problems of the work
of the national terminological commissions (Geografisch Tijdschrift 1967, p. 75).
Putting cartographic terms in good order is considered in the USSR as a compo-
nent part of the whole work on the perfection and standardization of terminology
in various fields of science and engineering. This work is not limited by simple
registration of terms and use of words inherent to one or another field of knowledge.
The terminological work in the USSR is connected with the historico-linguistical
and scientific and technical researches. In a historical aspect this work includes
studying of development of the national scientific terminology in connection with
the general development of science and engineering. The Formation ofthe Language
of Russian Science by l.l. kutina published by the Institute of Russian Language of
the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1964 can serve as an example of such research.
This work Covers the development of Russian terminology in mathematics,
astronomy and geography since the beginning of the XVIII Century.
The scientific and technical aspects of terminological work include the analysis
of terminological Systems adopted in one or another field of science or production
and the study and critical estimation of each term which is included in a given
System. As this takes place various variants of terms and their definitions are
revealed and compared. The correspondence of existing terms to the modern
level of science and production is established. Erroneous or obsolete terms are
revealed.
When necessary new terms are created. As a result of such research terms
are selected and defined. These definitions must meet present day requirements of
science and practice and be recommended for common use. For this reason there
is a principal difference between a terminological and an ordinary vocabulary work,
which has the aim to reflect possibly fully the existing use of words.
The Scientific and Engineering Terminology Committee of the USSR Academy
of Sciences is of scientifical and methodical centre of terminological work in the
USSR. The Committee works outtheoreticalfoundations and principles of building
terminological Systems in the main fields of science and engineering closely connec
ted with the fundamental sections of mathematics, physics, chemistry. Geneialized
worksBasics of Compilation of Scientific and Technical terminology: Problems of
Theory and Methods by d. s. lotte and other pubilications of the Committee
serve as guidance for the work of many branch commissions on terminology includ-
ing the commissions on cartographic terms.
The results of the work of branch commissions are published in separate issues
of the collections of recommended terminology. Issue 71published in 1966 contains
terms and basic notions on automation.
