VI. New terms relating to automation of cartographic processes.
The terms relating to the second, fifth and sixth sections of the abovesaid termino-
logical Systems cause the greatest difficulties in our work. In these sections new
notions appear most often and new terms are most often formed. But it does not
mean that the other sections (systems) of cartographic terms require lesser consi-
deration. Even in a most definite field as mathematical cartography many terms
and definitions give rise to discussions.
The grouping of the terms according to the abovesaid or other Systems (as for
example, is made by the French or German working groups) has a temporary,
auxiliary character. At the final stage of our work separate Systems of terms will
be united in a common dictionary-glossary with arrangement of terms in alphabe-
tical order.
But at the present stage of our work the grouping of the terms according to the
certain systems has still great importance. The grouping permits to involve for the
work most qualified specialists-scientists, diploma-engineers and practical workers
who are well familiar with various branches of cartography. This, in its turn,
permits better analyzation and enables to perfect the terminology of the appropriate
branches of cartography.
The glossary of Russian cartographic terms which is being prepared by the
cartographic terminology commission of the National Council of Cartographers
of the USSR should have not only a referential but also a normative character,
i.e. the glossary should include the terms recommended for general use. But it is
known that it is neither desirable nor possible for scientific terminology to be
put into use by law. New terms and their definitions can be widely used only when
the persons, who have to use them, will be convinced of the superiority of the
recommended terms.
Therefore it is very important tili the final publication of the glossary to discuss
widely the draft definitions of the terms. In connection with the above mentioned
factwe are preparing for publications as a preliminary edition, series of termino-
logical collections each of which will contain draft definitions of the terms
according to a certain section of cartography. After these projects have been
discussed we shall make necessary corrections and additions and prepare the final
summary edition of the glossary for publication.
Such an Organization of work may prove also acceptable for Commission II of
the International Cartographic Association.
Included in the program of the work of our Commission at the Third Technical
Conference of the International Cartographic Association is a very interesting
report The Terminology of Map Projections by Prof. D. h. maling. Prof. maling
has performed the great and useful work which will help us to normalize a great
number of terms of mathematical elements of the map. It will be rather useful
to carry out similar research on the terms of other elements of the map and other
sections of cartography. It is especially necessary with respect to the terms which
