By 'topographic ränge' is to be understood the part of the collection of landscape characteristics and elements represented on the map in accordance with a certain legend. On the horizontal axis the map scale, the degree of generalization and the symbolization are plotted (see fig. 3). In the graph, the location of a number of topographic maps is indicated. The location of the topographic maps 1 25 000 is marked with a rectangle. Within this rectangle six topographical maps from various countries have been noted. 1t appears to be possible to differentiate between the following types of topographic maps: I. The Belgian type This type, more than the other maps, shows a continuous topographic ränge. This is specifically true for built-up areas and orography. II. The Dutch type with a fairly wide topographic ränge, with the exception of built-up areas. IV. Topographical Map 1 25 000. Italy sheet 20 IV N.O.
