concerning the exploitation of the Continental Shelf 1967). These data were obtained
from the 'Staatstoezicht op de Mijnen' (State Supervisory Body on Mining) and could
be plotted. Finally through co-operation with the State Geological Service maps of
type C or C1 could be developed on which geological sea floor information could be
gathered.
Various boundaries, laid down in acts, resolutions and treaties are to be mapped in
type D sheets. Of very great importance are the type E sheets on which the concession
areas for exploitation of sand, gas and natural oil are represented. These data are
obtained from the State Supervisory Body on Mining.
In connection with this data gathering set-up, each of the above mentioned Services
and Government agencies gave their final approval for the data they themselves
provided on the divisional-sheets. The same procedure is followed for the half yearly
(January Ist and July Ist) updating of the sheets. The responsibility for the overall
production and the systematic updating of the data is in the hands of the Department
of Harbour Entrances located in Hook-of-Holland. A fringe benefit of this entire
Organization is that there are negatives available of all divisional-sheets at the Surveying
Department in Delft. From these negatives any desired map combination can be
produced on demand for third parties. Without any difficulties other subjects than
those mentioned in table A could be added to the System in the future.
Thus the 1:50 000 Documentation Sheets are produced through the intensive
co-operation of various authorities which are involved in research, exploration and
exploitation of the Continental shelf.
The symbols and their descriptions which are used on the divisional-sheets have been
brought together in a general legend. The Status of mapping for the various subjects has
been laid down in an index for each divisional-map type (see fig. 2).
NOTE
Three to four divisional-charts at a scale of 1 50 000 on the U.T.M. projection can be combined
to a positive (dimensions B4=58 x 80 cm) on stable transparant material. Half yearly (January Ist,
and July Ist.) the sheets are updated with available new data. The maps or combinations can be
ordered by letter, noting the desired block numbers or combinations (i.e. A'BDE or ABC, etc.)
from:
Rijkswaterstaat Direktie Noordzee, Chruchilllaan 362, Rijswijk (ZH), The Netherlands.
The costs per order are: For the first copy Fl. 75.00 and for each following copy Fl. 25.00
(exclusive of the Value Added Tax). These prices can be changed without prior notice. Shipping of
the Charts is done by the 'Meetkundige Dienst van de Rijkswaterstaat', Delft.

TRANSLATORS NOTE
This article contains the names of a number of official Dutch Government Services, offices and
agencies. Where such names occur for the first time in the text of the article the translation has
been given between parentheses. Subsequent occurrences are for ease of reading left translated in
the text. Except for 'Rijkswaterstaat', the translations for the offices, agencies, departments, and in
some cases Acts, do reflect their function closely. The translation for 'Rijkswaterstaat' (State
Waterboard) although correct, may not reflect its function well enough. 'Rijkswaterstaat' is at the
level of a Ministry and would be equivalent to the Canadian Federal Department of Public Works.
In table A, the last colomn, the offices and agencies responsible are given in the Dutch language
with their translations between parentheses underneath. This column may therefore be used as a
translation key.
