Reproduction of the Rotterdam-Europoort map 1 80 000 (See inserted map) INTRODUCTION Maps are very efficient means of communication. They are used as indispensable aids for travelling, sailing, research and many other purposes. Once the map has been called a promotor of business. That is probably the reason why the Rotterdam Municipal Port Management decided to publish a special smael-scale map of the Rotterdam seaport and industrial area. By order of the Port Management such a map at the scale 1 80 000 has been compiled and prepared by the Cartographic Division of the Public Works Department of Rotterdam. The time available for the preparation of the present edition has been very short (only two months). A special design and a very simple reproduction method has therefore been chosen. The selected method afforded also the opportunity to carry out additions and corrections during the whole process up tili the plate-making, resulting in extreme up-to-dateness of the final map. In addition, the completion of corrections did not depend on complicated technical equipment. This saved time and made the process more flexible. A first glance at the map reveals the lack of a grid or any other reference co-ordinate system. This does not mean that the map is missing geodetic control The whole area has been exactly surveyed and mapped by the Cartographic Division on a map series at the scale 1:10 000 (City Area of Rotterdam). This large-scale map series which has an excellent planimetric accuracy, provided the base from which the Rotterdam-Europoort map has been compiled. Prof. dr. ir. C. Koeman, State University Utrecht.
