Five European Topographie Maps
A contribution to the Classification of topographic maps and their relation to other
map types
There is a great deal of evidence that cartography in general is presently
experiencing a period of renewed interest. Characteristic for this renewed interest are
the following developments:
- The design of many new kinds of map types.
- The appearance of a much richer variety in map content.
- The design of more effective techniques of cartographic expression:
The expansion of the cartographic language.
- The design of automation programs and techniques for the purpose of the
compilation and produetion of maps.
- The improvement of reproduetion techniques.
Of great importance today is the appearance of voluminous and varied topographic
and thematic map series of individual countries as well as for continents, oceans and
