in the French method by a symbol according
to chronology under the head 'forms due
to erosion and denudation';
solifluction is included in the units of the
Czechoslovak, Polish and more or less in
the ITC maps.
For this area at the scale 1:25,000 a comparison
of the geomorphological maps shows that
those made using the method of Annaheim and
Moser and the system of ITC are the best as
they give clear information in a rather straight-
forward way.

1 Gilewska (1967) published the result of a similar
comparative study. She made geomorphological
maps according to the French (Tricart), the Hungar-
ian, the Russian and the Polish concept. The mapped
area was more complex than the one we selected.
2 The terminology of the legends of the original maps,
published in English (Demek, Klimaszewski, Ver
stappen Van Zuidam), is used here without change.
3 Loess transported by solifluction is mapped in the
unit 'gentle slope of solifluction mantle' under the

Ter gelegenheid van haar 75-jarig bestaan heeft de
Library of Congress een 20-tal belangrijke historisch-
kartografische artikelen gebundeld en rijk gei'llustreerd
uitgegeven onder de titel A la Carte. Het merendeel
ervan werd reeds eerder in de jaren 1944-1967 gepubli-
ceerd in het Quarterly Journal. Alle artikelen handelen
Over kaarten en atlassen, die aanwezig zijn in de Library
of Congress. De auteurs zijn negen vroegere en tegen-
woordige stafleden van de bibliotheek. De eindredaktie
berustte bij Walter W. Ristow, Chief of the Geography
and Map Division. Revisie en aanvulling vond in vele
gevallen plaats.
De artikelen zijn gegroepeerd in twee delen een algemeen
en een regionaal historisch-kartografisch deel, respek-
tievelijk betrekking hebbend op kaarten en atlassen
uit de 16de en 17de eeuw en kaarten van Noord- en
Zuid-Amerika daterend uit de 17de tot en met de 19de
eeuw. Het zaken- en Personenregister, met opgave van
de wijze waarop reprodukties van kaarten (genoemd
in de artikelen) te bestellen zijn bij de bibliotheek, maken
het geheel zeer handzaam.
