amongst a confusing array of islands of all
sizes I discovered a river hitherto unknown
(New River). This we followed up for three
weeks until we came to huge granite rocks,
which lying close together, formed a barrier
to our farther progress. We could of course
have gone on with some little difficulties, but
as we had traced the river up to the boundary
of Brazil, to a part where it was only 24 Yards
wide and very shallow, 1 considered it advisable
not to follow it farther. We were at a distance
of 470 miles from the mouth of the Coren-
tyne, and 670 feet above the level of the
sea".
Het is enigszins bevreemdend, dat Barrington
Brown steh "a river hitherto unknown", aan-
gezien hij kon weten, althans vermoeden, dat
dit de Corantijn moest zijn uit de gegevens
van Schomburgk uit 1835-1839.
Even bevreemdend is zijn naamgeving als hij
