HOW DO YOU GET THERE?
There are several possibilities:
a. by boat: Sheerness-Flushing with Olau Line; daily Service with luxury
Scandinavian car-ferry, cheapest fares between England and Hol
land. Harwich-Hook of Holland; Dover-Ostend or Dover-Zeebruges
(Belgium). Cars are transported on these ferries.
b. by air: to Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport; to Rotterdam-Zestienhoven
Airport; to Ostend (Belgium).
c. by train: from Hook of Holland to Rotterdam. Direct trains every hour
from Amsterdam and Rotterdam to Zeeland,terminus Flushing. From
Ostend or Zeebruges by train to Bruges, coach-connection Bruges-
Breskens, ferry to Flushing.
Ask your travel-agent for timetables, fares and other possibilities of
transport.
HOW DO YOU BOOK ACCOMMODATION?
Get yourself a list of hotels and boarding-houses at the Netherlands
National Tourist Office, London W 1,143, New Bond Street (2nd floor) or
at the Provinciale Zeeuwse VW, Postbox 123, Middelburg (Holland).
Write or phone directly to the hotel of your choice to make a reservation.
Holiday-homes can be reserved by the Provinciale Zeeuwse VW.
It is advisable to book early, especially during the holiday season.
WHAT IS THERE TO SEE?
There is a number of towns with historical interests, such as:
Aardenburg: St. Baafschurch - Gothic. Goes: Maria Magdalena-church,
Town Hall-Gothic. Hülst: Old fortified town, the centre issurrounded by
moats and ramparts, St. Willibrord basilica - Gothic; Town Hall-origi-
nally 16th Century, 19th Century modifications; fortifications with gates-
16th-18th Century. Middelburg: Old town centre with many housesclas-
sified as historical monuments, historical buildings - 15th and 16th
Century - Gothic and Renaissance. Abbey (museum) - Romanesque;
Town Hall-Gothic. Sluis: Theonly Beifort in Holland-Flemish architec-
ture - 14th Century. Veere: Little old town with many historical houses
and buildings. Campveerse Toren (restau rant)-15th Century; Onze Lieve
Vrouwechurch, Town Hall, Schotse Huizen on the quay (museum)
Gothic. Zierikzee: St. Lievens Monstertoren - Gothic; town gates:
Noordhaven (16th Century) and Zuidhaven (15th Century), Nobelgate
(14th Century).
WHAT ARE THE SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS?
Zeeland has a number of traditional games, such as: tilting the ring on
bare horseback, 'krulbollen' and archery. National costumes are still to
be seen on Walcheren and South Beveland. The South Beveland cos-
tume shows the religion of the person wearing it. A speciality are the
'eatable Souvenirs': 'bolussen' 'profetenbrood' (pastry), 'babbelaars'
(sweets), 'palingbrood' (kind of hotdog, but filled with eel), 'cramique' in
Sluis (kind of cake). Always a great attraction, are the weekly markets:
Hülst: Monday; Goes: Tuesday; Oostburg and Terneuzen: Wednesday;
Middelburg and Zierikzee: Thursday; Sluis and Vlissingen: Friday; Axel:
Saturday.
