De heer Niemeyer is doktoraal-Student fysische
geografie en tevens werkzaam als student-assistent
bij de afdeling Kartografie van het Geografische
Instituut in Utrecht. Bovenstaande bijdrage werd
geschreven als opdracht in het kader van dit student-
assistentschap.
De redaktie acht het onderwerp van groot belang voor
de lezers van het Kartografische Tijdschrift die voor
een belangrijk deel regelmatig met het vraagstuk van
auteursrechten te maken hebben. De redaktie stelt
dan ook graag de kolommen open voor discussie of
voor het geven van voorbeelden uit de praktijk.

From the viewpoints of both the map user and the bibliographer the information required in the map margin is
discussed. The various phases of the map reading process require i.a. the recognition of the map theme, a
clear legend, information on map rellability and information for carrying out cartometric work.
The bibliographer or documentation specialist makes moreover demands on a clear indication of the map
author, the map (series) title, the impressum and perhaps collation and annotation. As a growing number of
map descriptions are stored in data banks, standardisation of the bibliographic elements is very important.
These theoretical requirements on marginal information are examplified by the red imprint on a specimen man
inserted in this issue.
