When attempting to specify equal-interval percentage
tint scales for use on maps, eartographers face
difficulties, due to technical and psychological factors.
Technically, it is verry difficult to maintain dot size
during all the reproduction processes involved in map
making, and internal reflection or scattering of light
within paper causes offset printed dot screen tints to
become considerably darker than might be expected.
Provided that printing conditions are kept carefully
standardised, the actual densities of a series of
printed percentage tints can be measured using a
densitometer and plotted on a graph. Equal actual
density differences are not perceived as equal, however.
The Munsell scale is generally accepted as giving the
relationship between equal-appearing differences and
actual differences. For any printing colour, the density
ränge from white to füll colour can be plotted on the
Munsell curve, divided into as many steps as required
and the related densities found. These density values
can in turn be related to percentage tints, using the
first graph. A small practical experiment gave results
very close to the theoretically derived percentage
tints. A suggested six-step scale is 0%, 15%, 30%,
45%, 60%, 75%, 100% for most colours, or 0%, 10%,
25%, 40%, 55%, 70%, 100% for black.
Perfect results are very unlikely to be achieved, however,
because of the variability of the technical factors.
