Summary
Geological investigations began in Indonesia in the
middle of the 19th Century. In 1927, systematic
geological mapping of Java and Sumatra at scales of
1 100.000 and 1 200.000 respectively, was
started. Most mapping activities, however, came to
a standstill during the Second World War and the
subsequent period of political and economic
instability
The Start of the First Five Year Plan in 1969 offered
the opportunity to set up an extensive Programme for
the systematic geological mapping of the Indonesian
archipelago. This Programme includes the systematic
geological mapping of Java and Madura at a scale
of 1 100.000, the whole of Indonesia (with the
exception of Java and Madura) at a scale 1 250.000,
and the whole of Indonesia at a scale 1 1.000.000.
With the aid of the American Geological Survey a
modern cartographic department was established at
the Geological Survey in Bandung.
