Tenslotte
De problematiek, die in dit artikel is aangevoerd, is
door zijn grote verscheidenheid niet eenvoudig en kon
ook niet uitputtend worden behandeld. Het laat daar-
om ruimte voor aanvullingen en aanpassingen. Het
moet dan ook veeleer gezien worden als een eerste
proeve enige duidelijkheid te scheppen in deze mate-
rie. Een iteratief proces van aanvullingen en afwe-
gingen is zeker voor dit onderwerp op zijn plaats en
de auteur verwelkomt daarom aanvullende opmerkin-
gen en suggesties.

Summa ry
The cartographic profession has changed considerably
over the past two decades. The professional abilities
demanded of a cartographer today are different, un-
doubtedly heavier and more diversified than 20 years
ago.
Following this Observation, one could wonder what
impact this change has had on the cartographic educa
tion and upon the differentiation in (officially recog-
nized) professional levels in cartography.
After a brief review of the Situation with respect to
cartographic education in some countries in W-Europe,
the article concentrates on the Situation in The Nether
lands. Using the main elements of the cartographer's
job as criteria, the author recognizes four main
professional levels in cartography in The Netherlands:
scientific cartographer, cartographic technologist,
cartographic technician and cartographic draughtsman.
In a summary table, the main functional characteris-
tics are given (column 2), together with the main
professional abilities for each level (column 3) and
the consequent educational requirements (column 4).
