tiöle factor bij automatisering.
Daarover wordt echter in het ge-
heel niet gesproken; een van de
volgende delen zal daar uitvoerig
op in moeten gaan.
Voorts blijft het een vraag of het
zinvol is om ödn persoon het gehele
gebied van de vastgoedinformatie
te laten beschrijven. Een co-pro-
duktie van verschillende deskundi
gen op de verschillende onderdelen
van het onderhavige vakgebied zou
een aanzienlijk toegevoegde waarde
kunnen geven aan het geheel van de
nog samen te stellen en uit te geven
delen.

Summar y
This is also one of the papers which has been pre-
sented in Rotterdam at the 1984 Technical Symposium
organized by the Dutch Cartographic Society. In it,
one of the applications of ARTOL (as introduced in
the previous article) is described in detail: it is the
production of the topographic base map of Rotterdam
at scale 15. 000. In 1983 it was decided to produce
this map series from the ARTOL digital data base.
In making this decision the cost factor played a sig-
nificant role: compared to traditional map production
methods a net cost saving of 60% will be reached.
Next to a global sketch of the historical development
of the 15. 000 map series, emphasis is mainly on the
practical aspects of this new way of map production.
As an examplea fragment of a newly produced
15. 000 map is enclosed.

Summary
The introduction of a VAX version of GIMMS release
4. 3 at the ITC department of Urban Survey and Human
Settlement Analysis is described and examples are
given of applications of GIMMS in education and re-
search. General characteristics of GIMMS are dis-
cussed and it is explained how the GIMMS package has
been interfaced to other ITC hardware and Software.
Since GIMMS is not provided with a digitizing module,
digitizing programmes have been written for use on
the VAX and on a standalone Tektronix 4054. The
latter Programme has semi-automatic editing facili-
ties to assist in the creation of a correct segment file.
Various examples of Statistical mapping are given.
Another example shows the use of GIMMS in dealing
with a huge centroid datafile for 10 000 houses in
Dar-es-Salaam. Application of GIMMS for landuse
mapping is discussed with the example of the Jaipur
landuse map. The limited possibilities of GIMMS for
handling topographic line features are a disadvantage
in this type of mapping.
