Summary
IMPROVED PATTERN PROGRAMS FOR AN
INTERACTIVE GRAPHICS DESIGN SYSTEM
The Cartographic Laboratory of the Geographica!
Institute of Utrecht has at its disposal an 'Intergraph
I. G. D. S. (Interactive Graphics Design System) and
a Calcomp 1039 drumplotter.
This computer-system is used for the automated
production of mappatterns.
Since usually much keyboard work is involved in
making patterns with an I. G. D. S. a pattern program
is designed that is operated by an 'user command'.
With the help of this program one can produce uniform
patterns for all maps independent of the plot magni-
tude or the window-plane size.
The advantage of this pattern program is that anyone
is able to produce patterns that meet the requirements
of graphic semiology.
Maps produced by various people present a uniform
appearance.
This manner of making patterns compared with the
manual way of cutting self-adhesive tone sheets, gives
a time gain of approximately 75%.
