ifflsnuMsfe H. C. Pouls - OLD METHODS OF SURVEYING AND PRESENT-DAY TERMINOLOGY Historical maps are used and studied by many people. Often these people are also interested in the accuracy of the maps. The accuracy depends upon the surveying methods and in- struments used (if at all used). The purpose of this article is to provide laymen with some insight into the ways survey- ors laid down the base for map making. Some old instru- ments and methods of surveying - e. g. the traditional tri- angulation methods - are described in terms of present-day terminology. C. Koeman - A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ATLASES PUBLISHED IN THE NETHERLANDS FROM 1880-1940 This article announces the publication, in autumn 1985, of Vol. VI of 'Atlantes Neerlandici', a bibliography of atlases published in the Netherlands, of which work the volumes I-V appeared in 1967-1971, covering the atlases published from 1532 up to 1800. The work was published under the editorship of the author. Vol. VI, also under Koeman's editorship and with the collaboration of H. J. A. Homan and others, deals with the atlases published from 1880-1940. It contains biblio- graphies of 350 atlases (with their subsequent editions and reprintings)stemming from 194 different authors and published by 100 Publishing firms. As the greater part of this volume deals with the numerous school atlases for the different levels of education, the author discusses the relations between the development of education in geography, socio-economic developments and atlas-publishing in the period under review. He also discuss es the development of other atlas types. Professor Koeman is professor emeritus of cartography at the University of Utrecht. F. E. Gombert - A UNIFORM LEGEND FOR REGIONAL PLANNING MAPS In the Netherlands maps for regional plans, important in- struments in regional physical planning, do not have a uni form cartographic symbolisation and explanation of relevant spatial planning aspects. This may cause difficulties in comparing different regional plans, especially those of neighbouring areas. In addition, vague guidelines for setting up regional plans give rise to great diversity in their nature and (level of) accurateness. The author proposes a uniform legend for regional maps con- sisting of cartographic symbols as well as (simplified) ex- planations of the Classification units. H. Pape - URBAN CARTOGRAPHY AS HANDMAIDEN OF URBAN PHYSICAL PLANNING Since its origin during the industrial revolution, urban cartography first saw to the production of accurate base maps that were merged gradually into regulär and homo- geneous urban map series at scales 1:1000, 1:5000 and 1:10,000. Since World War Two thematic map production as a task has been delegated also to urban cartography departments, in order to provide inventories for physical planning and analytical tools for shaping planning policies. Amongst the physical and socio-economic map themes needed, the author emphasizes the production of integrated, synthesis maps, such as pollution maps. L. Heres - THE WEST AFRICAN CARTOGRAPHIC KITCHEN Present day cartography in West Africa is partly still the heritage of the facade which has been erected in the colonial era but which has never been part of the African socio-eco nomic reality. However, nowadays there is a development towards an own cartographic tradition, which is less sophisticated than the European one, but which is better fitted to the actual needs of the African Society. In the near future the emphasis will be on activities in the field of cadastral and technical mapping and mapping for education. Chr. de Bont - THE HISTORICAL LANDSCAPE MAP OF THE NETHERLANDS 1:50, 000 Aspects of the cartographic design of this newly proposed map series are discussed: Colour is the main design de ment, denoting the period in which actual landscape features (point, linear or areal) originated or have been reshaped. Next to the forms of landscape features the map also designates their (former) functions. A coloured map sample of the Waterland area north of Amsterdam has been inserted in this issue of the journal. The article is concluded with an interpretation of this sample in terms of landscape genesis. KT 1985. XI. 3 67
