Festschrift Ormeling sr
Tijdens de openingsceremonie van het 14e icA-kongres te Bu
dapest in augustus 1989 werd aan prof. dr F.J. Ormeling sr
wegens zijn Verdiensten voor het internationale kartografen-
dom een Festschrift aangeboden, getiteld Cartography, Past,
Present and Future (193 pp.). De uitgave, versehenen bij Else
vier Applied Science Publishers, kwam tot stand onder de re-
daktie van prof. D.R. Fräser Taylor, Canada, en prof. David
W. Rhind, Verenigd Koninkrijk, respektievelijk President en
vice-president van de ica, die tevens de aanbieding voor hun
rekening namen.
Behalve biodata van Ormeling sr en - in kortere vorm - van
alle auteurs, omvat het Festschrift twee maal zeven bijdragen
van de hand van verschillende medewerkers. In het eerste ze-
vental worden regionale thema's behandeld. Hieronder vallen
de kartografische stand van zaken in de volgende landen: Ni
geria (auteurs Adalemo en Balogun), India (Agarwal), Polen
(Baranowski), Frankrijk (Bertin), Mexico (Duch Gary),
Bondsrepubliek Duitsland (Freitag) en China (Hu Yuju en Fei
Lifan). Het tweede zevental belicht onderwerpen van themati
sche aard en wel kartografie als kunst (A.H. Robinson) en als
wetenschap (Papp Vary), de snelle vlucht van de historische
kartografie (Helen Wallis), de wereldwijde inspanning van de
ica tot verbetering van de opleiding in de kartografie (F.J.
Ormeling jr), kartografie in de ontwikkelingslanden (Fräser
Taylor), de revolutie in de kartografie in de jaren tachtig als
gevolg van de opmars van de Computer als routine gereed-
schap (Morrison) en de ideale 'tool box' van de computer-
kartograaf (Rhind).
