L. Heres - Via Incognita. The technological position of travel
Information Systems and related cartographic aspects
Currentiy, a wide ränge of so-called 'travel Information sys-
tems' are under development, or have recently been launched
on the market. The most important among them are:
'Itineraire': Michelin's pre-journey information System
that may be consulted by means of the French Minitel
network
Nav Tech 's Driver Guide: A route planning System that
can be found at hotel reception desks in the San Francisco
Bay area
In-car positioning Systems like the Travel Pilot (Bosch)
and Japanese ETAK clones
Autonomous route guidance Systems like Philips' CARIN
System
Beacon supported dynamic route guidance Systems like
Siemens' Euroscout, Autoguide and the Japanese Systems
RACS and AMTICS
Dynamic route guidance Systems based on the
RDS/Traffic Message Channel or the GSM mobile tele-
phone network.
AH these Systems require geographic information, structured
in specific ways. Acquisition of these data will be expensive.
Currentiy, in a European joint research project, investigations
are being conducted into how the costs of the creation of a
'European Digital Road Mapcan be reduced. Standardiza-
tion of contents and representation structures appears to be
one of the most important tools to achieve this goal.
A first step towards a Standard has already been made by
Bosch and Philips (GDF 1.0). The second step will lead to a
family' of related geodata Standards, each addressing a par-
ticular issue in the representation of (geographic) information.
All Standards are based on the European Conceptual Data
Model recently agreed upon.
J.F. Raper - Using the Macintosh in mapping and G1S
The Apple Macintosh, with its wide ränge of graphics pack-
ages and their Integration with the operating System, has
grown into a major cartographic tool over the last few years.
This paper outlines the basis of these developments bij ex-
amining the graphics architecture of the Macintosh and
describing the various techniques used to georeference this
data. Eight key areas of mapping and geographica! informa
tion Systems (GIS) are surveyed to illustrate the key package
available on the Mac and how they relate to the graphics ar
chitecture. It is concluded that the Macintosh now provides a
comprehensive ränge of mapping tools which include
sophisticated GIS capable of spatial ana/ysis.
L. Heres - Via Incognita.
spatiale.
