krijgen. Het is nog steeds niet duide-
lijk of zij daarmee sukses zal
hebben.
Buiten de door de Algemene Verga-
dering benoemde kommissies om is
de ICA zelf betrokken, samen met
Maxwell Publishers en ESRI, bij de
produktie van een digitaal gegevens-
bestand van de wereld voor weten-
schappelijke doeleinden. Via Perga-
mon Press zal er een serie
CD-ROM's met overlays met ver-
schillende informatie op schaal
1:1.000.000 beschikbaar worden
gesteld.
Aids in
Europa
Ander nieuws van het ICA-bestuur
is dat er nu ook een brochure be
schikbaar is over de aktiviteiten en
de rol van de Internationale Karto
grafische Vereniging. Zoals bekend
neemt de ICA een belangrijke plaats
in in de overkoepelende IUSM ('In
ternational Union for Surveys and
Mapping', waarvan de Statuten zijn
opgenomen in ICA-Nieuwsbrief 17).
Daarnaast is de Vereniging nu ook
toegelaten tot de 'International
Council of Scientific Unions'
(ICSU), welke een interdisciplinaire
wetenschappelijke benadering
voorstaat.
Standaard onderdeel van de ICA-
Nieuwsbrieven zijn ook verslagen
van konferenties en andere bijeen-
komsten op het gebied van de kaart-
vervaardiging in brede zin. Dit maal
is er een verslag van het 'seminar'
over toegepaste toponymy in Indone-
sie (16-28 Oktober 1989) (in Nieuws-
brief 16) en van de twaalfde 'Regio
nal Cartographic Conference for
Asia and the Pacific' georganiseerd
door de Verenigde Naties (Bangkok,
20-26 februari 1991) (in Nieuwsbrief
17). In de laatste Nieuwsbrief wordt
ook informatie verstrekt over kö
rnende kongressen, zoals het 'Fi3G
Forum' (Strasbourg, 25-27 mei
1992), de 6e 'Australasian Remote
Sensing Conference' (Wellington, 2-6
november 1992) en zelfs al over het
28e IGU kongres, dat van 4 t/m 10
augustus 1996 in Den Haag
wordt gehouden.
Het aantrekkelijke van ICA-
Nieuwsbrief 16 is dat er dit maal
wat interessante körte artikelen zijn
opgenomen over het kartografisch
onderwijs in Nigeria (door I.A. Ik-
huoria), over de vijfde editie van de
nationale atlas van Finland, die in
1992 zal worden voltooid (door S.
Jaatinen) en over de Atlas der Do
nauländer (door J. Breu).
Meer gebruikelijke onderdelen zijn
in de beide Nieuwsbrieven ook weer
gevuld, zoals een 'In Memoriam'
(voor prof. S.P. Chatterjee, voorma-
lig IGU-president en grondlegger
van onder meer de nationale atlas
van India), het 'Remote sensing
nieuws' (met informatie over
LANDSAT-beelden en SPOT-
satellietbeeldkaarten), het 'Nieuws
over kartografische verenigingen'
(met in nr. 16 de Britse Society of
Cartographers, voorheen Society of
University Cartographers (SUC)) en
het 'Nieuws uit de lidstaten'. In deze
laatste rubriek in nr. 17 presenteert
Duitsland zieh met algemene infor
matie over de jaarlijkse 'Deutscher
Kartographentag' van de Duitse kar
tografische vereniging (DGfK) en
met een overzicht van de topografi-
sche kartografie in voormalig West
en Oost-Duitsland. In beide gevallen
is het oog daarbij vooral gericht op
de recente eenwording. En ook in nr.
17 wordt de Nederlandse kartografie
weer voor het voetlicht gehaald,
middels een bericht van prof. F.J.
Ormeling sr over de vele atlassen die
de laatste tijd in ons land op de
markt verschijnen. De titel van het
stukje luidt: 'Het stillen van de Ne-

This is the first publication of the Standing Com-
mission on the History of Cartography. Map Collec-
tor Publications of Tring, Herts, United Kingdom
published the book in 1987 on behalf of the Interna
tional Cartographic Association and sales have been
very good. From the original print run of 1,000, to
date, 738 copies have been sold. The publishers hope
to issue a paperback edition in order to satisfy
worldwide demand. The authors are also hoping to
do a revised edition some time in the future and to
this end are inviting contributions and additions to

Introduction
Issued four times a year since 1975 and, under a
different name (Kartografie, Mededelingen van de
Kartografische Sectie) even since 1958, this journal of
the Netherlands Cartographic Society aims at pro-
viding the necessary link between Dutch-speaking
cartographers (also those in Belgium). It is published
in Dutch but provides summaries in the two ica
languages on behalf of an international audience
interested in new cartographic developments both
within and outside the Dutch language area. It has
a circulation of 850.

Technical characteristics
The text for the journal is provided by the authors on
diskette, and after passing through various editorial
stages one of the editors, Annemieke van Slobbe,
compiles all the text files and adds all the necessary
codes for the photo-typesetting. The many illustra-
tions (one of the most important objectives of the
editors) are still being processed in a traditional
manner and are not yet supplied to the printer in
digital form. The journal carries advertisements in
colour; occasionally the articles' illustrations are in
colour as well. Usually this is considered too expen-
sive and too labour-intensive, however. The jour-
nal's size is A4, with 64 to a maximum of 100 pages.
To each issue at least one complete coloured map is
added. We usually succeed in having several of these
enclosures. They are either provided free by their
publishers or bought at a discount when considered
particularly useful to the audience.
