These data, from both static and mobile measuring stations, can be fed directly into the system and, therefore, be used for both monitoring and the compilation of ongoing Statistical maps. The background of the maps and the types of illustrations can be adapted to any desired type of data or spatial Situation. The user can, by means of a simple menu, request every historical or present- day Situation and present it immediately in map form. Moreover, the original data can be consulted by interaction with the computerized map. Spatial planning This example refers to INFOPLAN used by the Swiss Federal Agency of Spatial Planning. Background Information to this system is the hectare raster data (Geostat) of the Ministry of Statistics, which was incorporated from a main frame system. The remaining carto- graphic elements were taken from digitized 1: 50.000 maps. In this system it is possible at different measurement levels and for different picture fragments to request information about various objects. The data base used in this case is"4th dimension". The advan- tage of this spatial information system lies in the fact that data only need to be entered once, but can be used simultaneously at different locations and in different ways. Building management The various objects are depicted by coloured Symbols on a scanned map layer. By pointing to the symbols the user obtains the information pertaining to that object. A thematic choice can be made by using commands in the menu bar. The measurement levels can be altered without restrictions in the choice of data. The data can, in their turn, be illustrated in the most varied Statistical forms. In this way, for example, overviews of the Situation with regard to the built environment, or of energy or water consumption, can be requested in a few seconds. The content of this system is obviously dependent on the particular Situation, and can be chosen individually by the user and integrated into the system.
