When presenting remotely sensed informationpossibly combi-
ned with additional geographic information, one should take
into account cartographic production rules, in order to convey
the intention of the map maker correctly to the map user.
Actually, the raw remote sensing data should be processed and
integrated in a cartographic message which only allows the cor-
rect explanation and excludes misinterpretations. Undoubtedly,
many agree upon the necessity ofthis approach, but very often
such a cartographic production is judged too laborious and
expensive, which makes the map maker decide for a less clear
product. The method applied by the cartography section of
Utrecht University shows that there is a Solution for almost any
form of integration of remote sensing information in a carto
graphic message, map images, visual integrations and analytical
integrations. This method can be implemented in nearly any
environment with remote sensing equipment and is based on the
principle of simple and fast production, with low costs ('low
budget) and fit for desk top publishing. It is also a usefiil method
for cartographic productions in small editions, for instance, for
educational and research purposes (e.g. supporting fieldwork).

nombre de regles de production carto
graphique afin de communiquer le messa
ge du producteur de cartes k l'utilisateur
de celles-ci. En fait, les donnees brutes
fournies par la teledetection doivent etre
integrees dans un message cartographique
univoque, a l'abri de toutes interpreta-
tions possibles. La necessite en est souvent
reconnue, mais, en raison des circonstan-
ces et des frais, le produit cartographique
laisse finalement beaucoup desirer.
Dans le cadre du groupe de cartographie,
une methode a ete elaboree d'oü il ressort
que pour toutes les fiormes d'integration,
des donnees issues de la teledetection cor-
respondent, dans l'environnement meme
des appareils utilises, une image carto
graphique. Les principes de cette methode
sont: un travail simple et rapide, surtout
economique ('low budget'), realisable par
DTP ('desk top publishing). La methode
est fort utile pour des cartes avec un tira-
ge limite, telles que Celles utilisees dans
l'enseignement et la recherche resultats
interimaires rapides completant des tra-
vauxpratiques, presentation des rapports,
etc.)
