naam eer aan.
De figuren i en 2 geven een overzicht van de ontwikkeling
van beide indices voor het totale aantal illustraties geduren-
de de periode 1975-1994. Slechts vier jaargangen uit de begin-
periode bleven ver beneden het gemiddelde uit tabel 1, maar
de jaargang 1978 met het absolute record van acht illustraties
per artikel zorgt voor het noodzakelijke evenwicht. Voor de
resterende periode mag men concluderen dat de mate van
illustratie in het Kartografisch Tijdschrifi voor beide indices
een consequent, gelijkmatig beeld vertoont. De laatste drie
jaargangen (1992-1994) kenden ongeveer vijf illustraties per
artikel en 0,6 illustratie per KT-pagina.

De dalende trend, die sinds 1992 zichtbaar is en zieh hopelijk
niet in de toekomst voortzet, geldt overigens niet voor iedere
vorm van illustratie. Over dezelfde periode blijkt het aantal
figuren en tabellen toe te nemen: bijvoorbeeld het aantal figu
ren per artikel in 1994 (ca. 2,5) was alleen in 1978 en 1987
hoger. Het aantal kaarten en foto's blijkt vooral in artikelen
terug te lopen, terwijl dat aantal in de overige rubrieken en
berichten van het KT stabiel blijft.
Afsluitend mag gesteld worden dat de mate van illustratie in
het Kartografisch Tijdschrift goed is, maar misschien nog
beter kan worden. Daarom is het beleid van de huidige
redactie erop gericht de geschreven tekst kritisch te bekijken
en alternatieven in de vorm van illustraties te stimuleren.
Natuurlijk moeten daarbij, net als in het verleden, de kwali-
teit en het nut van illustraties bovenaan staan, omdat vele,
siechte illustraties net zo min bevorderlijk zijn voor de com-
municatie met de lezer als ononderbroken tekst.

The technological developments of the
past 20 years have significantly changed
the editing of a modern journal. The ori-
ginally analogue lay out of articles has
been replaced by an almost completely
digital approach. At the same time, the
possibilities for illustrating the journal
have improved enormously. Articles in a
cartographic journal commonly contain
subjects that are suitable for conveying
their message visually to the reader, as is
the goal ofmost cartographic produets. In
order to get an impression ofthe degree of
Illustration of the Dutch Cartographic
Journal, an inventarisation is made of the
number of figures, tables, photos and, of
course, maps and map extracts in almost
all editions of the journal during the
period 19/5-1994. It appears that the aver-
age article in this period contains over
four illustrations, whilst the complete
journal (including informative messages
etc.) presents one illustration per two
pages. With an average of two maps or
map extracts per article and one per four
pages the journal deserves its adjective
'cartographic'. Although it is not a bad
score, the opinion ofthe editors is that the
degree of illustration can still improve.
Articles are critically reviewed and illust
ration alternatives for text are stimulated.
Quality and usefulness of illustrations
comes first, since bad illustrations are as
unfavourable for functional communica-
tion as large continuous text blocks.
