Urban cartography in The Netherlands has come out of isola-
tion by means of the Dutch Cartographic Society, the NVK. Up
tili 1970 urban cartography in The Netherlands involved only
the geodetic departments of the cities of Amsterdam, The Hague
and Rotterdam. The evolution ofthe Dutch urban cartography
started with the demand for more thematic maps and with the
introduction of modern graphic technics. The computerization
of map production created a demand for greater Cooperation
with the users ofthe maps and with the producers ofthe same
kind of geographic information, such as other cities and the
national Topographie Survey.
The author had a managing position in the urban cartography
department of Amsterdam for 26 years, and he draws from his
own experience in his article.

C'est la Societe Neerlandaise de Cartographie (NVK) qui avait
fait sortir de son 'isolement' la cartographie urbaine aux Pays-
Bas; jusqu'en 1970, seuls les departements topographiques des vil-
les dAmsterdam, de La Haye et de Rotterdam s'y ete Interesses.
L'augmentation de la demande en cartographie thematique et
l'emploi de techniques graphiques modernes ont contribue son
essor. L'introduction de la cartographie assistee par l'ordinateur
rendu necessaire une Cooperation plus large d'une part avec les
utilisateurs de cartes et d'autre part avec les produeteurs des bases
de donnees geographiques similaires, tels que les autres villes ainsi
que la Service Topographique des Pays-Bas.
L'auteur de l'article a ete, pendant 26 ans, cadre responsable au
departement de cartographie urbaine dAmsterdam.
