This paper describes a project on monitoring the land cover of
the Calavon Valley in the Department ofVaucluse in Southern
France, using remote sensing imagery and Classification techni
ques. Its main purpose is the teaching ofthese techniques to stu-
dents of Cartography at Utrecht University, and the Inter
national Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences
(ITC) in the Netherlands. It is also used to get an insight into
the possibilities and problems of methods of ground—truth gat-
hering and various Classification techniques.

II s'agit d'un projet du suivi de l'utilisation du sol de la vallee
de Calavon (Dep. de Vaucluse, au Sud de la France), concer-
nant la visualisation et la technique de Classification des images
transmises par teledetection. Son objectif principal est l'enseig
nement des dites techniques aux etudiants de cartographie
l'Universite d'Utrecht et l'Institut ITC (Enschede) aux Rays-
Bas. II pourrait egalement etre utile pour approfondir des con-
naissances des problemes et des methodes de verification au sol
et des dijferentes techniques de Classification.
L'article est une Version adaptee d'un rapport presente la
Conference de Barcelone de l'a.c.i. (cfr. Proceedings 2, iyth ICA
Conference, pp 1442-1451).
