163&: a nightmare for the bibliographer

tions
A new edition of Prof. Koemans Atlantes Neerlandici is being
compiled. The map descriptions will be made following the
isbd(cm); for the description of the atlas as a book the Prin
ciples of bibliographical description by Fredson Bowers will be
used. However, Bowers principle of describing 'ideal copies has
to be adjusted, because 'ideal copies of atlases do not exist.
A folio atlas is a series of folio sheets which are folded and
bound together: one side of each sheet shows the map, the other
side letter press text. Because this text is a self-contained entity
on each sheet, and does not run continuously through the atlas,
single folio sheets could easily be omitted or added. 1t happened
that of some sheets fewer copies were printed than needed, en-
tailing a reprint in order to compile complete atlases. For such
a reprint, the map and/or the text could be revised. If there
happened to be a surplus ofsome sheets, these were simply kept
and used for the next edition. This practice of thrifiiness in
printing and compiling the atlases resulted in almost every
atlas leaving the printer's and binder's Workshop being dijfe-
rent. Some consequences of these methods are demonstrated by
two examples.
In the copies of the 1633 German Atlas we find 14 maps re-
placed by new ones. Replacement was so irregulär, that it was
impossible to distinguish variants of the atlas as a whole: in
theory 214 dijferent variants could be made! The stock of the
106 sheets with maps and text for the Dutch Appendix 1637
was so large, that all were used for the 1638 Novus Atlas. The
signatures are altered in dijferent ways. In the present Atlantes
Neerlandici atlases are considered as variants based on one or a
few replaced maps. However, experience with the German
Atlas demonstrated that the number of variants can be equal
to the number of copies described. For the new revised edition
of the Atlantes Neerlandici Solutions have to be found to de-
scribe these features.
Resume
P.C.J. van der Krogt - Production d'atlas Amsterdam vers
1630: un cauchemar pour les bibliographes
Mots-cles: cartographie historique; cartographie d'atlas; ap-
plications
scription) seront appliques.
la planche suivante. Ainsi les planches sont interchangeables;
phenomenes.
