De Boskabouter van Wolters-Noordhoff Adasprodukties
brengt weer een nieuw gebruik van het klein-formaat
wereldatlasje: als relatiegeschenk en reclamemiddel voor de
grote uitgave! De eerste verscheen in 1977: toevallig precies
400 jaar na de uitgave van de eerste 'zakatlas'. Een tweede
uitgave kwam vijf jaar later in 1982. De 1995-editie ver
scheen ter gelegenheid van de uitgave van de 5ie editie van
De Grote Bosatlas. De kaartjes meten 8,5 bij 11,5 cm: vrijwel
exact het kaartformaat van het eerste zakatlasje uit 1577! U
vindt dit atlasje als bijlage bij dit nummer van het Kartogra-
fisch Tijdschrifi.

Het artikel is gebaseerd op het onderzoek dat de auteur ver-
richt in het kader van de nieuwe, volledig herziene uitgave Figuur 6.
van Koemans Atlantes Neerlandici. Aangezien dit onderzoek De Boskabouter
op dit moment vooral de i6e- en I7e-eeuwse uitgaven be- uit 1995.
treft baseren gegevens over de latere atlassen merendeels op
de eerste uitgave van de Atlantes Neerlandici.

On the occasion ofthe publication ofthe Boskabouter Wood
Gnome), a sbort history ofsmall atlases is given. The first small
format world atlas appeared in 1577 and was a reduced, cheap-
er Version ofthe Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Orte-
lius (1570), which can be considered as the first published mo
dern atlas. At the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the
seventeenth centuries, there was a rapid increase in the produc-
tion of small world atlases: apparently there was a large de-
mand for geographic and cartographic Information even
among the less well-heeled section of the population. The type
changed in the i8,f> Century. The small atlas was produced more
as a pocket atlas to be carried while travelling. The actual term
pocket atlas appears for the first time after 1730 (the French
Atlas de Poche in 1734 and the Dutch Zakatlas in 1739Afiter
a drop back in the nineteenth Century, pocket atlases ofthe first
part ofthe twentieth Century were still ofthis type. The Boska
bouter is an example of a new type: a small atlas as a give-
away and advertisement for the füll size publication.

C'est l'occasion de la parution de Bos
kabouter (le nain des bois) qu'un apergu
historique des petits atlas est presente.
Le premier de ces petits atlas a ete publie
en 1377, une edition au format reduit et
moins chere du Theatrum Orbis Terra
rum de Abraham Ortelius (1370) que
l'on peut considerer comme le premier
des atlas modernes.
A la fin du i6e et au debut du i7e siecle
la production des petits atlas du monde
prend un envol: sans doute en raison de
l'interet et de la demande d'un public
moins aise pour les informations geo-
graphiques et cartographiques. Au i8e
siecle, ce type d'atlas se transforme en un
atlas de poche, pouvant accompagner les
voyageurs.
Cette denomination meme fait son appa-
rition dans les annees 1730: en 1734 l'At-
las de Poche frangais et en 1739 Zakatlas
(Atlas de Poche) neerlandais. Le 19c sie
cle a connu une diminution d'interet
pour de telles publications; Celles de la
premiere moitie du 20e siecle appartien-
nent encore au meme type.
Par contre, l'atlas Boskabouter est un
nouveau genre: ce petit atlas est un ca-
deau pour relations publiques et publi-
cite pour l'edition au grand format.
