Vormgeving en afwerking
De vormgeving en aankleding hebben aparte aandacht ge-
kregen. Duidelijk is zichtbaar gemaakt hoe de bestaande
bouw uitgebreid is met een aanbouw. De houten balken
met een stalen kern die de nieuwe constructie dragen zijn
opvallend - transparant gelakt - in het interieur aanwezig.
Op verschillende andere punten komt het hout terug: balie,
stoelen en tafelranden van beukehout versterken de een-
heid. De veelkleurigheid van kaarten en atlassen in aanmer-
king genomen is de rest van de zaal op neutrale maar gedis-
tingeerde wijze afgewerkt: zwart, wit en grijs voeren de bo-
ventoon. Een solide, antracietgrijze vloerbedekking zorgt
voor geluiddemping, rust en eenheid. De bakstenen muren
van de bestaande bebouwing laten er geen twijfel over be-
staan in welk gedeelte van het UB-complex men zieh be-
vindt. In de balie zijn vorm en funetie op aantrekkelijke
wijze met elkaar verenigd; een duidelijke afscheiding, maar
met een transparante struetuur en een royale doorgang naar
de kamer van de conservator. Om temidden van al deze
nieuwe zaken iets uit te stralen van het kostbare cultuurbe-
zit, dat de ub onder haar hoede heeft, is midden op de dia-
gonaal door de kaartenzaal een opvallende piek gereserveerd
voor de beroemde Blaeu-wieg. Dit meubel bevat de negen-
delige Grooten Atlas en de twee stedeboeken die Joan Blaeu
uitgaf in 1664. Geplaatst op een veilige verhoging en onder
het toeziend 00g van personeel en een videocamera troont
hij plechtig boven de dagelijkse activiteiten. Op gepaste af-
stand van het rechtstreekse daglicht is een wandsegment ge-
schikt gemaakt voor tijdelijke expositie van een van de vele
antieke wandkaarten, die in de magazijnen bewaard wor
den. De magazijnruimten zijn nauwelijks van uiterlijk ver-
anderd, zeker niet om esthetische redenen. Tot het uiterste
is daar doorgegaan met bestaande vloerbedekking en de
reeds aanwezige inventaris, waarbij de sombere, uit het
begin van de jaren zeventig stammende kleuren bruin en
beige overheersen. Alleen daar waar ter isolatie voorzetmu-
ren nodig waren is spierwit behäng toegepast. De kosten
die hiermee uitgespaard werden konden ten gunste komen
van het uiterlijk van de publieksruimte. De nieuwe kaarten
zaal heeft daardoor een representatieve sfeer gekregen die
uitnodigt tot Studie en onderzoek.

The Map Room of the Amsterdam University Library was in-
stalled a few months ago in a new location in the library com-
plex. After a spectacuLar removal and a trial period in which
the inevitable hitches were dealt with, the new Map Room was

offcially opened on 2yth February 1996. This article deals with
the problems which confronted the Map Curator during the
planning, rebuilding and Installation of the new map depart-
ment. The primary aim was to improve the conservation ofthe
map and atlas collections. In the old map room they suffered
greatly from the limited Space and a storage System which was
not designed for heterogeneous documents, which was very
compressed and had to cope with frequent reference to the sto-
red documents. Considerable rebuilding work was required in
the allocated location. A new type of drawer ehest was de
signed, so that the maps most frequently referred to could be
handled without folding, and could be better conserved. Stora
ge, reference and the activities of the personnel, all of which
had taken place with difftculty in one Space, were now physi-
cally separated. The air conditioning System of the storage
Spaces had to satisfy high demands, which led to some extra re
building and to the installation of a new System. The opportu-
nity was taken to replace the furniture of the reference and
working Spaces and to install a good electronic infrastrueture
for the PCs and for security measures. Special attention was
paid to the selective use of daylight and to the use of artificial
light. Notwithstanding all the expensive alterations, the utmost
was done to reuse the existing storage facilities, adapted if ne-
cessary. The new Situation is not only of Service to the conserva
tion of the collection, it is also for users and staffa functional,
attractive andpleasant working environment.

Depuis quelques mois, la Salle des cartes de la BUA occupe de
nouveaux locaux dans le complexe de la Bibliotheque. Apres
un demenagement spectaculaire et une 'periode de rodage', La
nouvelle salle a ete ouverte ofßciellement le 29 fevrier 1996.
L 'article est consacre aux problemes que rencontre le conser-
vateur de cartes lors de la planification, transformation et

tif principal etait Tamelioration des conditions de conserva
tion des collections de cartes et d'atlas qui ont du souffrir
dans l'ancienne salle des cartes, suite h l'espace reduit et un
Systeme de conservation peu adapte au materiel heterogene,
entasse et tres frequemment consulte. II fallait realiser des
modifications importantes de l'architecture des Locaux choi-
sis. Un nouveau type de classeur a ete developpe afin de pou-
voir garder les cartes les plus abimees plat. Stockage, con-
sultation et d'autres activites du personnel, auparavant effec-
tues dans le meme local, ont ete separes dans l'espace; les
depöts voisins ont ete pourvus de climatisation, exigeant de
nouvelles installations et soins particuliers de la part des ar-
chitectes. Profitant de l'occasion, les catalogues des salles de
consultation et de travail ont ete entierement remplaces par
une infrastrueture electronique, permettant l'utilisation des
PC en toute securite. Une attention particuliere a ete consa-
cree aux acces des lumieres naturelle et artificielle. Tout en
realisant ces transformations fort coüteuses, il fallait conser-
ver les anciens locaux, en les adaptant leur nouvelle fonc-
tion. De ce fait, non seulement la conservation des collec
tions a ete amelioree, mais les visiteurs et le personnel peu-
vent desormais travailler dans un environnement fonetion-
nel et agreable.
